Sinead O'Conner's NOTHING COMPARES TO U song and video came out in 1988. Sinead O'Conner herself had and still has beauty and talent of the highest level. Her songs were simple and complex all at once, the lyrics hard hitting, poetic and layered with meaning and depth.
A little makeup and a completely shaved head were the tools that Sinead used to accentuate her stunning look.

Sinead, a true Spiritual Warrior, stood behind what she believed in (Spiritual Freedom for All) so firmly that she challenged the Pope himself, on National TV - talk about having guts!! What celebrity would have the huevos to do that these days???? Sadly, nobody. We have a bunch of kiss-asses who are scared to lose their jobs, pretending to be "alternative", like Lady GaGa, Katy Perry and so forth. Yech.
Anyway, here is Sinead working it out on Saturday Night Live, putting her ass on the line and being a real Warrior:

So what did Miley Cyrus do that was challenging?
Let's see: 1) prance around at the VMAs with a guy wearing a pimp costume, pretending to be his "ho", make sexual gestures with her tongue and a giant fake hand, and do the same routine that can be found at strip clubs across the USA and world. I'm not judging, but this can not come close to or even touch the hem of the robes that Sinead wore when she made her world-rocking statements about religion and freedom, and the role that the Catholic Church had in the oppression of her and other countries.
What else?
Wearing very, VERY cheap and tacky looking fake nails and jailhouse looking hand tattoos, she proceeded to lick tools in the video that was supposed to be "like Nothing Compares 2 U". Keep in mind that in Sinead's stately video she was walking around some beautiful Gothic stonework dressed in black robes and cloaks wearing Doc Martens with a shaved head, looking like a cross between an Angel from Heaven and a Punk. Miley's choice of outfits? White booty shorts or stark naked. Miley's video doesn't even come close to the effect that Sinead's video had on fashion, culture, everything. Unfortunately I couldn't find any stills from the beautiful, entrancing music video "Nothing Compares To U" or I would have put them here. It seems that I will have to capture some stills myself, at a later time.
So, USA....is THIS what we want for our women and girls in the USA? For everyone to have access to their naked bodies, and have it be known that if you want to get to the top of the charts, you have to do THIS? --------> (More importantly - is THIS what we in the USA *WANT TO BE KNOWN WORLDWIDE FOR????? Is THIS this year's contribution to worldwide culture?????????? It's not even a Fashion Statement because there are no clothes in the photo.)
AND THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM A MEN'S MAGAZINE OR ADULT FILM - HOW??? (I'm not judging, I'm not prude but I think there should be a difference when it comes to a serious musician's career. I'm fine with nudity but it shouldn't be the only selling point of the artist IMO. )
Because, again I add - this does NOT take Talent. This just takes a dietitian and a personal trainer, which anybody can hire. This also allows everybody access to our women and girls, just so they can do the same exact thing that women in the 80s were doing off of sheer talent. That's a really bad trade. So what's next - total spread shots and full on sex in a serious artitst's music video? Because that's the very next step in this progression.
So Sinead....nothing, especially not this effort by Miley Cyrus and her producers, compares to this video, and to YOU, who faced down the Pope Himself and rocked the fashion and music world, still to this day! Thanks for all that you did and still do for us Sinead!!! Sorry you got burned by the rip-off culture of today, USA should be ashamed for supporting/allowing this!!!
